Raising Toddlers

Thomas and Luke sure do keep me busy!

On Friday Rob had to go to SLC and so I asked him to take Luke with him. Thomas and I got to spend some time alone together. Good grief! One child at a time is a piece of cake. :) He slept, ate, and we played outside. While he was playing outside he tripped and fell, landing on his nose. So his face was grazed all over, both nostrils had lots of blood coming out, and his lips were bleeding and swollen. He looked terrible and was crying. I ran him into the apartment and we fixed him up and he was then fine but wanted just to sit on my lap for a long time after that. I honestly felt kind of sick from all the blood on his face, but didn't pass out or anything. Luke and Rob then came home and as Thomas and I came inside, Luke was so excited to see me. "Hi!" he said with a big grin on his face. He then gave me about 4 or 5 consecutive hugs. Rob and Luke had been taken out to lunch by Bill, an older deaf man, and apparently Luke ate and ate and then finally had two brownies and ice-cream for dessert (good thing it was an all-you-can-eat restaurant). Rob told me Luke kept swiping Bill's napkins to wipe his face as he ate.

Thursday night I went to the store to pick up two little chairs which we could use for time-outs. Well, this kind of backfired because they couldn't want to sit on the chairs and were quite excited after being particularly naughty because they would get to sit on the chairs.

They are speaking so much at the moment. Luke adds a "t" to the end of most words, so he says "downt," "upt," "chairt," and so on. Of course, the word "out" is quite easy for him to say. Luke follows instructions really well. I am so impressed with how obedient he often is when I ask him to do something for me. He will get a diaper and the wipes when he poops and he will even throw the diaper in the garbage can. What I think is interesting is that a lot of the words he says will consist of instructions: out (get me out of here or take me outside), down (get me down), up (help me up), help (help me do this thing), hug (give me a hug), all (i'm all done with this food) and so on. One of his favorite words to say is "hap," which he says when he wants to tell me he is happy. He is really a mommy's boy and wants to be with me most of the time and wants to hug and kiss me throughout the day. He is a very sweet and gentle little boy.

Thomas is becoming more gentle and will hug Luke occasionally, especially after I have told him he needs to be more gentle. Thomas is absolutely obsessed with two things: (1) books, and (2) computers. He is still struggling to say the word "computer" but he is improving. It comes out different each time. When he wakes up in the morning he walks straight over to the computer, pointing at it, saying "puter" or something similar. He wants to play with it, but he knows he is not allowed to. Straight after breakfast he wants to sit on my lap and have me read to him.

Both Thomas and Luke love throwing things in the garbage can. It is useful when needed, but otherwise, a real pain in the butt. Almost daily I will find things in the trash that are not meant to be there. Today I found all my candies which Rob got me in Malaysia. Some were in the garbage can in my bedroom and the rest were in the kitchen garbage can. They think they are being so helpful, but in reality, I hate fishing things out, like our little plastic funnel and other needed items, like socks.
